Synopsis
Set during the reign of King Sukjong in the Joseon dynasty, the story focuses on Dong Yi, a water maid who gains the trust of Queen Inhyeon and later the favour of the king when he is moved by her prayers for the health of the Queen during the court disputes caused by Jang Hee Bin. Dong Yi becomes a concubine with the rank of sook-bin and bears a son who will later become the 21st king of Joseon, Yeongjo.

Povestea
Acţiunea dramei este stabilită în timpul regelui Sukjong din dinastia Joseon. Povestea urmăreşte viaţa lui Dong Yi, o fată care ajunge să câştige încrederea reginei Inhyeon. Ea este favorizată şi de rege, care este mişcat de rugăciunile ei pentru viaţa reginei în timpul unei dispute la curtea regală provocată de o altă concubină/regină Jang Hee Bin. Dong Yi devine concubină cu rangul de sook-bin. Dong Yi va naşte pe cel care va deveni al 21-lea rege de Joseon, Yeongjo (tatăl prinţului moştenitor Sado; bunicul lui Yi San).

Set during the reign of King Sukjong in the Joseon dynasty, is slightly based on the historical character Consort Suk. The story focuses on Dong Yi, a slave maid working in the Bureau of Music. Her warm personality, sincerity and exceptionally keen mind help her solving difficult court intrigues and allows to rose in ranks, first to a Lady of the Court then to a Concubine, despite being born as Lowborn.
While solving a case she meets the King, who enjoy her treating him as a Police Officer (as he introduced himself) and who finally falls in love with her. She also meets the Queen Inhyeon (gaining her favor), and another concubine, Jang Hee Bin first an ally then a bitter enemy.
In her quest to survive on the court and bring justice to the Lowborn she makes many allies, among others: Cha Chun Soo (her not blood related older brother), Seo Yong Gi (Police Chief), Court Ladies Jung and Bong.
Dong Yi becomes a concubine with the rank of sook-bin, and bears a son who under her tutelage later becomes the 21st king of Joseon, Yeongjo (father of Crown Prince Sado; grandfather of Yi San)

Dong Yi (died 204 BC) was a military general of the Qin Dynasty. He surrendered to Xiang Yu after the Battle of Julu in 207 BC. In 206 BC, following the collapse of the Qin Dynasty, he was conferred the title of "King of Di" by Xiang and given part of the lands in Guanzhong as his fief when the latter split the former Qin Empire into the Eighteen Kingdoms.

Dong was a descendant of Dong Hu, a high ranking minister in the Jin state during the Spring and Autumn Period.
In 209 BC, Chen Sheng and Wu Guang started the Daze Village Uprising to overthrow the Qin Dynasty. The emperor, Qin Er Shi placed Zhang Han in command of the imperial army, with Sima Xin and Dong Yi serving as his deputies, to quell the rebels.
In 207 BC, Zhang Han attacked the insurgent Zhao kingdom and besieged Zhao forces at Julu. Xiang Yu of the Chu kingdom came to Zhao's aid and defeated the Qin army at the Battle of Julu, despite having a smaller force. Zhang sent Sima to the capital city, Xianyang, to request for reinforcements. Sima later reported to Zhang that reinforcements would not be arriving, and that the state power of Qin had fallen into the hands of the eunuch Zhao Gao. Zhang was aware that even if he defeated the rebels, Zhao Gao would later frame him for treason and have him executed, hence he decided to surrender to Xiang Yu. Xiang accepted the surrender.
After the fall of the Qin Dynasty in 206 BC, Xiang divided the former Qin Empire into the Eighteen KingdomsGuanzhong (heartland of Qin) to the three surrendered Qin generals (collectively known as the Three Qins). Dong was given part of Guanzhong as his fief and received the title of "King of Di". Later that year, Liu Bang (King of Han) attacked the Three Qins and defeated Zhang Han. In 205 BC, during the Chu–Han contention, Liu Bang was defeated by Xiang Yu at the Battle of Pengcheng, and Sima Xin and Dong defected to Xiang's side. The following year, Liu attacked Xiang at Chenggao. Liu lured Cao Jiu, the defending general, to pursue and attack him. The Chu army fell into an ambush at the Si River and was defeated by Liu's forces. Cao, Dong and Sima committed suicide.
